We love to make suet cakes for our chickens in the winter months, to give them some extra fat in their diets to keep them warm. This time we decided to switch it up a bit and make our cakes using coconut oil because not only is coconut oil an excellent source of healthy fat, but it also has antimicrobial effects and boosts metabolism! Added immune support for our sweet birds. We hope your chickens like them too!
Coconut Oil Suet Cake Recipe
Ingredients:
- 16 oz. of coconut oil (if you use my moms coupon code REALFOODRN you will get 10% off HERE, buy three or more and you will get an additional 25% off too!)
- Handful of mealworms, cracked corn, sunflower seeds, and flax seeds (we actually like to buy most of these in bulk from Azure Standard, to save some money)
Directions:
- Heat a saucepan over medium heat.
- Add coconut oil to the pan and allow it to melt.
- Place your mold on a cookie sheet to allow for easier transport to the fridge or outside (if it’s chilly out).
- Add in additional ingredients.
- Stir to combine.
- We found that scooping the mealworms into the cups evenly worked the best because they float to the top and would pour all into the first cup.
- Then pour in the rest to fill the cups to the top. You can also pour in the dry ingredients first and pour the coconut oil over top. Either way works.
- Bring cookie sheet with mold to the fridge or outside (if it’s cold out).
- Allow to harden completely.
